LIBRARY PROGRAM
Activities relating to the Reading Scope and Sequence Library tie-in with “ Literary Response and Analysis” and/or “Study Skills”
Motivation to read, especially choosing & borrowing library books
l K: interest in books, finds books to explore, takes home books from school
l 1: interacts with self-selected texts; reads for enjoyment
l 2: reads independently, identifies favorites, visits library, keeps rdg. log
l 3: reads longer fiction independently, identifies favorites, visits library
l 4: meets 25 book standard
Listening and responding to text, especially Red Clover and D.C.Fisher programs
l K,1,2: listens to & responds to what is read; makes connections between stories & personal experience; draws, writes or talks about main characters or key ideas; retells or dramatizes some key information from a story
l 3: shows understanding of text in written responses & connects what is read to broader world of ideas
l 4: discusses theme, compares plots
l 5 & 6:
Study Skills
l 4: creates information in an organized way, uses oral & written language to present ideas clearly
l 5 & 6: finds information, takes notes, makes outlines, summarizes and organizes information, uses appropriate resources, uses library effectively
Activities relating to Classroom Themes and Reading Programs
Kindergarten: provide classroom books that extend reading & math programs and themes.
East Wing and West School: support garden investigations with classroom books and library based whole class activities.
Youngers: suggest/provide classroom read-aloud, assist individual student researchers projects, individual, level-appropriate readers
Olders: provide author study books, Junior Great Books materials for use w/ 4-Blocks program, assist individual researchers in various studies
North Wing: provide time, materials and instruction for the Investigations part of Open Court Program at each level; provide classroom copies of the actual books covered in the student anthologies, provide copies of books suggested by unit bibliographies; also books and materials on Native American theme
1: Let’s Read - making a class alphabet book
2: Sharing Stories – working on individual “I Love To Read” booklets
3: Friendship – stations to familiarize students with alphabetizing skills and using a dictionary and thesaurus
4: Risk & Consequences – asking questions, locating library materials

Study skills: classes as part of content area study reinforcing research skills (finding library materials, using EBSCO’s PrimaryOnline Database)
